On former Amatsukominato
About Former-Amatsukominato Town
Located on the eastern side of Chiba Prefecture's Boso peninsula, Amatsukominato sits in between the vast Pacific and Kiyosumi Mountains. On the south side is a beautiful coastline with a natural inlet and a beach lined with sand and stone. To the north is the mountain chain that runs from east to west and is home to luscious green forests.
In Kamakura period, Holy Priest Nichiren was born in this town and Tanjoji was built in commemoration of his birth. According to legend, on the day he was born, schools of sea breams were sighted jumping near the surface of the inlet, a natural phenomenon that led to the designation of this bay as a natural monument. On the grounds of Kiyosumi Temple (or also called Seichoji) is another natural monument: Thousand Year Cedar, nicknamed "Big Cedar of Kiyosumi." The view of sunrise, from in front of Nichiren's statue within the temple, has been compared to that of Fuji Mountain's and been named as "Japan's 100 Most Beautiful Sunrises." The Department of Environment has also recognized Amatsukominato as "Kaori (Fragrance) View Top 100, Tanjoji's Fragrance of Incense and Stony Shore Breeze."
Commercially, Amatsukominato has developed as a fishing town but has been called a beautiful ocean park and a paradise of nature with the abundance of wild birds and squirrels in the mountains. Steeped also in history, Amatsukominato continues to serve as an oasis and a "multi-spot tourism stop" for the greater Tokyo metropolitan area.
