Child Rearing Allowance for Single Parents (Jido Fuyo Teate)

Information About Receiving the Child Rearing Allowance for Single Parents

Single parent families may receive financial aid until the March 31st following the 18th birthday of an eligible child (or the 20th birthday if the child suffers from physical or mental disabilities recognized by the law).

In order to receive these benefits, the applicant must be a single mother, father, or legal guardian of a dependent who is 18 years old or younger, and fulfill one or more of the following conditions

  1. The parents of child have divorced, and the child is living with one of the parents.
  2. One of the child's parents has passed away, or it is uncertain whether or not a parent is dead or alive.
  3. One of the child's parents suffers from a severe disability, but the child is not available for other additional public aid.
  4. A child who has not received support from either any financial support from one of their parents for over one year.
  5. A child whose parent has been imprisoned for over one year.
  6. A child who was born out of wedlock.
  7. One of the child's parents has received a domestic violence protection order from the court system.
  8. One of the child's parents has been abscent for more than a year.

The following families are not eligible to receive benefits offered by the Child Rearing Allowance Act (Jido Fuyo Teateho).

  1. The family does not have a registered permanent address in Japan.
  2. The child is being raised by a biological parent and their spouse.
  3. The child is eligible to receive government aid, survivors' compensation, etc.
  4. The child is staying a child welfare facility.

Please note that there may also be other limitations based on income, etc.

Partial allowance amount is determined within the range above in increments of 10 yen according to the applicant's income.
Applications can be made at the Welfare (Fukushi) Division in the Fureai Center (located at 887-1 Yairo).

 

Other Related Welfare Services

  • Special Child Rearing Allowance (Tokubetsu Jido Fuyo Teate) Parents or guardians taking care of a child under 20 years of age who has a severe physical or intellectual disability may be eligible to receive aid. The amount of benefits received is determined by the parent's income.
  • Support for Single Parent Family Medical Care (Hitori Oya Katei Iryohi Josei) This service subsidizes part of or all copay required for a single parent's medical care or prescription medicine. Parents or guardians taking care of a child 18 years old or younger are eligible. The amount of benefits received is determined by the parent's income.
  • Traffic Orphan Aid (Kotsu Iji Teate) A child who lost a parent in a traffic accident or the parent bears a Disability Handbook Level 1 or 2 as a result of a traffic accident. The amount of benefits received are determined by the parent's/guardian's income.
  • Mother and Child/Widow Welfare Loans (Boshi-Kafu Fukushi Shikin) Available loans include: business start-up, education, training, housing, schooling preparation, living costs, etc. These loans are available for single mothers raising a minor.

Applications can be made at the Welfare (Fukushi) Division in the Fureai Center (located at 887-1 Yairo).
