Kamogawa has developed into a city with prosperous fishing, farming, and tourism industries, thanks to this climate and location.
In recent years, Kamogawa has developed into an all-year, model resort town equipped with facilities such as an urban-rural exchange center, sports recreation facilities, and amenities such as hotels, health, and welfare centers.
Kamogawa strives toward the future city image of "an earth-friendly, comfortable resort city where one can experience its richness and beauty." The former township of Amatsu-Kominato (now Kamogawa City) is located to the east of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba Prefecture, and lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Kiyosumi Mountains. To the south, Amatsu-Kominato is bordered by gorgeous beaches, as well as an inlet embraced by the shore, making for the perfect natural port. The Kiyosumi Mountain Chain stretches from the east to west of Amatsu-Kominato in the north, and its luscious forests cover most of this area in green.
In the Kamakura period, the Holy Priest Nichiren Shonin was born in Amatsu-Kominato, and the Tanjoji Temple was built here in commemoration of his birth. According to one of the legends surrounding his birth, on the day Nichiren was born, schools of sea breams were sighted jumping near the surface of the inlet. This natural phenomenon and many other relics related to Nichiren Shonin can still be seen here today. The Thousand Year Cedar (nicknamed the “Great Cedar of Kiyosumi”) can be found within the grounds of Seichoji Temple (also called Kiyosumi Temple). This tree has been designated as National Natural Monument, and is viewed as a sacred tree by the locals. The view of the first sunrise of the year, as seen from the front of Nichiren's statue within the temple grounds, has been appointed as one of "Japan's 100 Most Beautiful Sunrises" alongside that of Mount Fuji. Additionally, Amatsu-Kominato has also been recognized as “the Fragrance of Tanjoji’s Incense and Ocean Breeze,” one of Japan’s “100 Most Fragrant Landscapes” by the Ministry of the Environment. Amatsu-Kominato is truly blessed with boundless historical and natural resources.
Originally Amatsu-Kominato saw its beginnings as a fishing town, but now prospers as a natural paradise. Amatsu-Kominato boasts an abundance of seafood and beaches with the clearest waters in the Minami Boso region, as well as forests rich with the gifts of nature. With a rich culture nurtured by the town’s nature and history, Amatsu-Kominato continues to serve as a charming "multi-objective tourism stop" and resort getaway for the greater Tokyo metropolitan area.
